What it's for

A business plan for a bank or for yourself needs numbers: how much to invest, when you will turn a profit, whether the money will last and where the break-even point is. Here you enter assumptions in the yellow cells, and the model builds three years month by month and shows the payback period, cash gap, profit by year and charts.

What's inside

  • "Assumptions": parameters and tax regime, products (price, costs, volume, growth, cap), start-up investment, fixed costs, loan and seasonality.
  • "Model": 36 months — volumes, revenue, profit and loss statement, loan schedule, cash flow statement, break-even point, cumulative cash flow.
  • "Summary": payback, first profitable month, cash gap, totals for three years, revenue by product and two charts.

Who it's for

Entrepreneurs, sole traders and the self-employed preparing a business plan or loan application, small business owners evaluating a new location, a new line of business or an expansion, students and consultants.

Compatibility

Excel 2007 and later, LibreOffice. No macros. Tax rates and other parameters are in the assumptions: check them against the current rules in your country before use. The calculation is indicative.

Questions and answers

What period does the model cover?
36 months (three years), month by month. Totals by year are shown in the summary, so you can look at 12 or 24 months as well.
Which taxes are included?
You can choose a turnover tax, a revenue-minus-costs tax or a profit tax; you set the rates yourself. The calculation is simplified (no contributions, deductions or loss carry-forward), so check the rates against the current tax rules in your country.
How is the payback period determined?
It is the first month when the cumulative project cash flow (EBITDA minus tax minus start-up investment, excluding the loan) is no longer below zero.
What is a cash gap in the model?
A month when the cash balance falls below zero. The summary shows how much is missing, so you can increase your own funds or the loan in advance.
