What it's for

Every Sunday, "what shall we cook this week" turns into a long discussion and extra spending at the shop. Here you write down your favourite dishes and their ingredients once, choose dishes for each day, and the spreadsheet builds the weekly shopping list, subtracts what you already have at home and calculates how much it costs.

What's inside

  • "Groceries": up to 100 items with pack price, size, stock at home and the number of packs to buy.
  • "Recipes": up to 60 dishes with ingredients per serving (up to 500 rows); cost per serving is calculated automatically.
  • "Menu": 7 days with 4 meals each, two dishes per meal, number of servings, cost.
  • "Shopping": a ready list with a "Bought" mark. "Summary": cost by day and meal, per person per day, two charts.

Who it's for

Families and anyone who plans meals for the week, wants to save on groceries, not forget anything at the shop and avoid unnecessary spending; also suitable for a dormitory, a camp or a small canteen.

Compatibility

Excel 2007 and later, LibreOffice. No macros. Prices and recipes are your inputs, so you can adjust them.

The file is in English.

Questions and answers

How does the spreadsheet build the shopping list?
For each dish on the menu it takes the ingredients per serving, multiplies them by the number of servings and adds up each item for the whole week. What you have "at home" is subtracted, and the rest is rounded up to whole packs.
Can I change prices and dishes?
Yes. The sample is fictional: prices and recipes are approximate. Replace them with your own on the "Groceries" and "Recipes" sheets; dishes and items are chosen from drop-down lists.
Why is the shopping cost higher than the menu cost?
The menu is calculated by servings actually eaten, while at the shop you buy whole packs. The difference stays in stock for next week.
What units should I use for quantities?
The item's unit from the list: grams, millilitres or pieces. If the item is in grams, enter 200 for 200 grams.
