What it's for

When you have several debts, it's hard to know which one to pay off first and when it will all end. Enter balances, rates and minimum payments, choose a method, and the spreadsheet builds a 10-year schedule: the payoff order, your debt-free date and how much interest you'll save compared with paying only the minimums.

What's inside

  • “Settings”: method (“Avalanche” or “Snowball”), total monthly debt budget, first payment date, and a check that the money covers the minimum payments.
  • “Debts”: up to 15 debts: name, type, balance, rate, minimum payment; payoff order, time to payoff and payoff date for each debt, interest and savings.
  • “Schedule”: a monthly plan for 120 months with a breakdown by debt, compared with paying only the minimums.
  • “Summary”: time to become debt-free, total interest, interest saved and two charts.

Who it's for

Anyone with several loans, credit cards, instalment plans or payday loans who wants to know in what order and how quickly to pay them off. Suitable for a family budget and for personal financial coaching.

Compatibility

Excel 2007 and later, LibreOffice. No macros. Calculations are approximate. The file is in English.

Questions and answers

What is the difference between Avalanche and Snowball?
“Avalanche” sends spare money to the debt with the highest rate and usually results in the least interest paid. “Snowball” pays off the smallest balance first: debts disappear faster, which helps you stick to the plan.
What is the debt budget?
It is the total amount you can put towards all debts together each month. Minimum payments are paid from it, and everything above the minimums goes to the priority debt.
What happens when a debt is paid off?
Its payment doesn't disappear: the freed-up money rolls over to the next debt in the order, so the plan speeds up like a snowball.
How accurate is the calculation?
The calculation is simplified: interest accrues once a month on the balance; fees, insurance and penalties are not included. Check exact amounts against your lender's payment schedule.
